Attack of the Red Spider Beta Comming Soon

The Attack of the Red Spiders is a game based off of the webcomic xkcd. The comics at xkcd involve a form of humor that our age seems to lack. They possess not only humor but also intelligence. The comic has been one of my favorites for a very long time and I have greatly enjoyed the over 700 comics that are posted at xkcd.com.

The Attack of the Red Spiders is a game based off of a few of the comics posted early on in the xkcd series. These comics depict mischivous red spiders doing all sorts of terrible things (climbing walls, flying on floating cubes and walking over each other). In The Attack of the Red Spiders we attempted to duplicate these things by adding references to many of the xkcd comics as well as adding a few twists of our own. The game is two dimensional and is a platformer (think mario with guns) that also incorperates features of a full tower defense game. The basic idea is to stop the spiders from causing havoc and destroying the world (yeah it's cliched but so what?).

We have added a lot of stuff to the game including achievements and credits (used to buy weapons). The game is based on the spiders AI. They are capable of doing many different things such as creating a bridge to cross a gap or climbing on top of each other to form a red spider made ladder. The spiders are countered using a veriaty of machines to damage and slow their movements. The placement and selection of weapons is what will keep you alive in this game.

As well as placing towers and other machines the player will be able to control a player character as well. This character will also be armed and will be able to move around the battlefield and slay spiders with a bloated arsenal of deadly weapons. These weapons will allow the player to take an active part in fighting off the terrible spiders and their quest to sate their hunger for chaos.

We have been working on the game for about a year now and plan on releasing a beta by late October or November (this date may change). The game promises to be a fun one and looks like it will show off plenty of the features that Game Maker 8 offers.
